What Is AI-102?

AI-102, "Designing and Implementing a Microsoft Azure AI Solution", is the exam that earns the Azure AI Engineer Associate certification. For several years it has been the go-to credential for engineers building solutions on Azure's pre-built AI services.

The AI-102 exam tests your ability to deploy and integrate ready-made Azure AI capabilities rather than build models from scratch. Its 2026 objective domains are:

• Plan and manage an Azure AI solution (25 to 30%)
• Implement decision support and content safety solutions (10 to 15%)
• Implement Azure AI Vision solutions (15 to 20%)
• Implement natural language processing solutions (25 to 30%)

What Is AI-103?

AI-103, "Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure", is the new exam that leads to the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate certification. It is the direct successor to AI-102, but it is not a simple rename. The focus has moved decisively towards generative AI, autonomous agents and Microsoft's Azure AI Foundry platform.

The AI-103 objective domains are:

• Plan and manage an Azure AI solution (25 to 30%)
• Implement generative AI and agentic solutions (30 to 35%)
• Implement computer vision solutions (10 to 15%)
• Implement text analysis solutions (10 to 15%)
• Implement information extraction solutions (10 to 15%)

The headline change is that single largest domain: implementing generative AI and agentic solutions, weighted at 30 to 35%. That covers building multi-agent systems, prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), function calling, chain-of-thought evaluation and managing conversation memory. AI-102 vs AI-103: Side-by-Side Comparison

The two exams share a price, a length and a scoring scale, so the real difference is in what they test and which one has a future.

A passing score of 700 on a 1 to 1000 scale does not mean 70%. Microsoft uses scaled scoring, so the raw number of questions you need correct varies with the difficulty of your exam form.

AI-102 rewards you for knowing how to stitch together Azure's existing AI services. 2. Shelf life

This is the decisive one. AI-102 stops existing as a bookable exam on 30 June 2026. 3. Market signal

Job adverts increasingly ask for hands-on generative AI and agent experience, not just the ability to call a vision API. Holding the newer Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate sends a clearer "I build modern AI systems" signal than a credential the vendor has just retired.

Which Certification Should You Take in 2026?

Use these simple rules.

Take AI-102 only if all of these are true:

Take AI-103 if any of these are true:

Should You Already Hold AI-102?

What About AI-200?

You may also have seen AI-200 mentioned. That is a separate, broader exam aimed at cloud developers integrating AI across full Azure architectures, with a beta expected around May 2026 and general availability later in the year.
