The AWS Cloud Practitioner is worth it if you are new to cloud, work in a non-technical role near cloud projects, or want a low-risk first credential. It is not worth much if you already build on AWS or you are chasing a salary jump. That is the honest answer to the question behind every search for the aws cloud practitioner salary: the certification alone does not set your pay.
This post covers who benefits, who should skip to Associate level, what the job-market data actually shows, and where the certification leads.
What the Cloud Practitioner Actually Certifies
The exam (CLF-C02) tests whether you understand AWS at a foundational level. It is a vocabulary and concepts exam, not a skills exam.
AWS lists these out-of-scope tasks for the exam: coding, cloud architecture design, troubleshooting, implementation and load testing. You will not be asked to build anything, and passing does not prove you can.
| Detail | CLF-C02 |
|---|---|
| Questions | 65 (50 scored) |
| Time | 90 minutes |
| Format | Multiple choice and multiple response |
| Passing score | 700 on a 100 to 1000 scale |
| Target candidate | Up to 6 months of AWS exposure, IT background not required |
The four domains are Cloud Concepts (24%), Security and Compliance (30%), Cloud Technology and Services (34%) and Billing, Pricing and Support (12%).
AWS says on its certification page that the credential is valid for 3 years. For full cost and format detail, see the course page rather than this post.
Who the Cloud Practitioner Helps
Non-IT and business roles
AWS describes the exam as designed for candidates new to cloud who may not have an IT background, and names line-of-business roles such as sales, marketing and project management. If you sell, manage or support cloud products, the certification gives you the shared vocabulary your engineers and customers use.
Career starters
For someone with no IT history, it is a structured first goal. It will not replace experience, but it shows you finished something on a real vendor syllabus.
People who need a first win
A foundational pass builds exam habits before a harder Associate exam. That matters more than the badge.
Who Should Skip It and Go Straight to Associate
Skip it if you already work hands-on with AWS services. The Cloud Practitioner will teach you little, and an Associate certification signals more to a hiring manager.
Go straight to Associate if you:
- Have used EC2, S3 and IAM in a job or serious project
- Plan a cloud engineer, developer or administrator career
- Already hold another cloud foundation certification such as AZ-900
AWS lists three Associate paths as next steps: Solutions Architect, Developer and SysOps Administrator. The AWS page also says passing an Associate or Professional exam recertifies your Cloud Practitioner, so the foundation exam adds no lasting value once you hold a higher one.
Exam Tip: If you skip CLF-C02, still learn its billing and support material (12% of the exam). Associate exams assume you understand pricing models and support plans.
What It Does and Does Not Do for Hiring
It can get your CV past a keyword filter for entry-level and cloud-adjacent roles. It can make a career changer's story easier to believe. It can help you in a conversation with a cloud team because you know what they are talking about.
It does not qualify you for an engineering role. Employers hiring engineers want to see what you built.
What the Salary and Job Data Shows
No certification sets a salary. Pay depends on the job title, your location, your experience and the employer. The Cloud Practitioner is a foundational credential and AWS does not publish salary figures for it.
I looked for a source I could verify. The one I fetched while writing this post is ITJobsWatch, which tracks UK job adverts. For the 6 months to 12 October 2026, it recorded:
- 41 permanent UK job adverts citing the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
- A median salary of 32,500 GBP, but based on only 3 salaries quoted in those adverts
- A share of 0.035% of all permanent UK jobs advertised
- The most common job title was Trainee (7 adverts), followed by Account Manager, Infrastructure Engineer, Test Automation Engineer and Test Engineer (6 each)
Three salaries is too few to treat as a market rate, and the data covers the UK only. Read it as a signal of the kind of roles that mention the certification: trainee, account-facing and junior technical jobs, not senior engineering. I did not find a US figure I could verify from a source I fetched, so I am not quoting one. Salary pages you see ranked in search results often mix job titles and cannot isolate what the certificate adds.
What the Cloud Practitioner Leads To
The usual routes are:
- AWS Associate certifications for hands-on cloud roles (Solutions Architect, Developer, SysOps Administrator)
- AI Practitioner for people moving toward AI work on AWS, covered in our AIF-C01 four-week study plan
- Your current job, with more cloud responsibility, which is where the certification pays off for many business-role holders
The strongest career result comes from pairing the certification with a project: deploy a static site, set up a billing alert, write about what you learned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it?
Yes for non-IT staff, career starters and anyone who wants a first AWS credential. No for engineers who already use AWS daily, who should aim for an Associate exam.
How much is the AWS Cloud Practitioner salary?
There is no official salary for the certification. The ITJobsWatch figure above (32,500 GBP median, from 3 quoted salaries) is too thin to rely on. Your pay depends on your role, location and experience.
Are there AWS Cloud Practitioner jobs?
ITJobsWatch counted 41 UK permanent adverts citing it in six months to 12 October 2026, mostly trainee, account-facing and junior technical roles. Few jobs require it, and more mention it as a plus.
Is cloud an entry-level job?
Some cloud-adjacent roles are open to beginners, such as trainee and support positions. Cloud engineering roles generally expect hands-on experience that a foundational certification does not provide.
