KCNA Explained: Domains, Cost and Is It Worth It in 2026?

KCNA certification costs $250, runs 90 minutes online and now has four domains, not five. Here is the current blueprint, what the exam actually tests, how it compares to CKA, and who should take it in 2026.

KCNA certification is the entry point to the CNCF Kubernetes track, and it is the one certification in that family you can pass without ever touching a terminal. It costs $250, takes 90 minutes, and is delivered online as a proctored multiple-choice exam.

The short answer on whether it is worth it: take KCNA if you work near Kubernetes rather than in it, or if you are heading for the Kubestronaut title and need all five CNCF certifications active at once. If your job is running clusters, skip it and go straight to the CKA.

There is a second reason to read on. The KCNA blueprint changed, and a lot of the study guides still ranking for this exam describe the old one.

What Is KCNA Certification?

KCNA stands for Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate. It is administered by the Linux Foundation on behalf of the CNCF, and it sits below the CKA, CKAD and CKS in the same certification family.

The format separates it from every other Kubernetes certification. CKA, CKAD and CKS are performance-based: you are dropped into a live cluster and marked on what you build. KCNA is multiple choice, delivered online and remotely proctored. You are tested on whether you understand Kubernetes and the wider cloud native ecosystem, not on whether you can fix a broken node under time pressure.

That makes it the right exam for platform-adjacent roles. Product owners, SREs moving across from traditional ops, solutions architects, pre-sales engineers and developers whose code runs on someone else's cluster all get real value from a credential that proves conceptual fluency.

Exam Tip: Your $250 buys two attempts. The Linux Foundation includes one free retake with the KCNA exam, and you have 12 months from purchase to schedule and sit it. Book the first attempt earlier than feels comfortable, because a failed first sitting costs you nothing but time.

KCNA Exam Domains and Weightings in 2026

The current blueprint has four domains. If a study guide shows you five, with Cloud Native Observability listed separately at 8%, it is describing a retired version of the exam.

The Linux Foundation moved observability out of its own domain and into Cloud Native Architecture, and confirmed the exam would be updated no earlier than 24 November 2025. The rest of the structure stayed broadly as it was.

Do not read that as observability being deprioritised. It is now competing for space inside a 12% domain alongside the ecosystem and community content, which means fewer questions but the same expectation that you know what Prometheus, OpenTelemetry and Fluentd are for.

Where the marks actually are

Nearly three quarters of the exam sits in the first two domains. Kubernetes Fundamentals at 44% and Container Orchestration at 28% come to 72% between them, so a candidate who knows pods, deployments, services, scheduling, storage and networking cold is most of the way to a pass before touching the ecosystem material.

The common failure pattern runs the other way. Candidates spend their revision on the CNCF Landscape, which is interesting and easy to read about, then get caught by questions on how a service actually routes traffic to a pod.

KCNA Cost in 2026

The Linux Foundation sells KCNA three ways, and the middle option is the one most people miss.

At $49 for the official course, the LFS250 bundle is the sensible default unless you already own training you trust. The THRIVE-ONE bundle only pays for itself if you intend to sit more Linux Foundation exams in the same year, which realistically means you are working towards Kubestronaut.

The certification is valid for two years. That is shorter than most vendor certifications, and it matters if you are collecting all five CNCF credentials, because the Kubestronaut title lasts only until the end of the year in which the first of your five certifications expires.

How Hard Is the KCNA Exam?

Harder than its associate label suggests, and easier than any of the practical exams in the family.

One thing worth being straight about: the Linux Foundation does not publish a question count or a pass mark for KCNA on its official exam page or on the CNCF certification page. Third-party guides state 60 questions and a 75% pass mark almost universally, and candidate reports line up with that, but it is not a published figure. Treat it as a working assumption rather than a fact you can rely on, and revise to comfortably clear it rather than to scrape it.

What genuinely catches people out:

  • Scenario questions with plausible wrong answers. Several options will be real Kubernetes objects. Only one solves the problem described.
  • Ecosystem breadth. You need to recognise what a few dozen CNCF projects do, even though the architecture domain is only 12%.
  • Time pressure is not the problem. Ninety minutes is generous for a multiple-choice exam. Candidates who fail run out of knowledge, not clock.

If you have run kubectl in anger for a few months, KCNA is a two to three week revision job. Coming in cold, budget six weeks and build a small cluster to poke at, because reading about pod scheduling teaches you far less than watching a pod fail to schedule.

KCNA vs CKA: Which Should You Take First?

This is the real decision, and for a large share of candidates the honest answer is that KCNA is optional.

KCNA is not a prerequisite for CKA. Nothing stops you booking the CKA first, and if your role involves administering clusters, that is what employers are screening for.

Take KCNA first when one of these applies:

  • You need a credential that proves cloud native literacy for a role that does not involve running clusters.
  • You are new enough to Kubernetes that a structured syllabus is worth more to you than a certificate.
  • You are going for Kubestronaut, which requires KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS to be active at the same time.

Skip it when you already administer clusters daily. Spending $250 and three weeks proving you know what a pod is, when you could be preparing for the exam that actually moves your salary, is a poor trade.

Is KCNA Certification Worth It in 2026?

For the right candidate, yes. For a working Kubernetes administrator, no.

Worth it if you are:

  • Moving into a platform, SRE or DevOps role from traditional infrastructure
  • In a pre-sales, product or architecture role where you discuss Kubernetes more than you configure it
  • Working towards Kubestronaut and need it as one of the five
  • A developer who wants to understand the platform your services are deployed on

Not worth it if you are:

  • Already comfortable administering clusters, in which case CKA is the credential that gets read
  • Looking for a security specialism, where KCSA and then CKS is the sharper path
  • Hoping a multiple-choice associate certification will get you a Kubernetes job on its own, because it will not

The certification's value is real but narrow. It proves you can hold a competent conversation about cloud native architecture. It does not prove you can keep a production cluster alive, and no employer reads it that way.
