MS-102 was never a standalone certification. It was one half of the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert credential. To earn the Expert badge you had to pass MS-102 and hold at least one of three associate certifications:

What Is AB-650 and Why Did Microsoft Create It?

Exam AB-650 leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certification. It is still listed as beta on Microsoft Learn as of 11 October 2026, and the practice assessment is not yet available.

The reasoning is not hard to follow. MS-102 tested a Microsoft 365 tenant as it existed before Copilot became a mainstream administrative workload. AB-650 assumes your tenant now contains AI services that need licensing, governing, monitoring and securing, and that autonomous agents are running inside it with identities of their own.

The exam sits across four product areas: Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Agent 365. That last one is the tell. Agent 365 did not feature on MS-102 at all.

Microsoft's audience profile expects you to arrive with experience of Microsoft 365 workloads and Microsoft Entra ID, an understanding of Defender XDR capabilities, and familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell. It is pitched at intermediate level, so it is not an entry point into the Microsoft stack.

MS-102 vs AB-650: Domains Compared

This is where the difference becomes obvious. Both exams share a security and governance core, but AB-650 hands 35 to 40 percent of the paper to material that simply did not exist on MS-102.

MS-102 weightings above are from the skills measured as of 28 April 2026 in Microsoft's MS-102 study guide. The summary on the MS-102 exam page still lists the older split (10-15, 25-30, 35-40 and 15-20 percent), so if you see those figures elsewhere, they predate the April update.

AB-650 compresses identity, Defender and Purview into one 40 to 45 percent domain. On MS-102 those were three separate domains totalling 65 to 80 percent between them. The security and compliance content has not vanished, it has been condensed to make room.

The AI Domain: What Is Genuinely New

The 35 to 40 percent AI services domain is the reason your MS-102 notes will not carry you through AB-650. It breaks into four areas.

Enable and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot

Assessing tenant readiness, resolving data readiness problems (data leaks, oversharing and compliance gaps), managing web search for Copilot and Copilot Chat, configuring Microsoft 365 Copilot Search, and managing third-party AI providers and Copilot connectors. Tenant-level Copilot settings extend to self-service purchases, release preferences, AI disclaimers and video and image generation.

Implement and manage agents in Microsoft 365 and Agent 365

This is the sharpest departure from anything on MS-102. You are expected to manage lifecycle workflows for agent identities using Microsoft Entra Agent ID, secure agent access with access packages and conditional access, manage agent owners, and run the agent registry: discovering Microsoft and third-party agents, reviewing requests, publishing or rejecting agents, and uploading custom agents.

Secure and govern agents using Agent 365

Monitoring agent activity, protecting sensitive data, and evaluating compliance gaps, all through Agent 365.

Monitor AI services in Microsoft 365

Managing and monitoring AI service costs, reading Copilot usage reports in the Microsoft 365 admin center, and using the Copilot Control System for adoption and service health.

Exam Tip: Treat Microsoft Entra Agent ID and the Agent 365 registry as your highest-priority new study areas. They are the concepts with no MS-102 equivalent, they sit in the heaviest-weighted new domain, and there is almost no third-party training content covering them yet.

Purview also gains AI-specific scope on AB-650. You need to review and respond to DLP alerts for AI services, and monitor and secure AI activity using Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). DLP policy requirements extend to Copilot alongside Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and endpoints, as they already do on the April 2026 MS-102 objectives.

Cost and the Beta Discount (Now Closed)

Microsoft prices exams by the country or region in which they are proctored, so check the figure shown at checkout for your location rather than trusting a headline number.

Microsoft ran a beta offer: the first 300 candidates who took Exam AB-650 on or before 18 August 2026 received 80 percent off using code AB-650SkyClub. That window has now passed, so expect to pay the standard regional price.

Some caveats that still matter:

• Beta exams are not scored immediately. Microsoft gathers question quality data first, so expect a wait for your result rather than a score at the test centre.

There is a trade-off in sitting a beta. You get the earliest possible credential, but you sit an exam with limited official training, no practice assessment, and a delayed score. Microsoft has confirmed the practice assessment usually appears within eight weeks of an exam leaving beta.

Should You Sit MS-102 Before It Retires?

Sit MS-102 now if you are nearly ready

If you have already passed MD-102, the Teams Administrator exam or SC-300, and your MS-102 revision is well advanced, book it. You are one exam away from an Expert-level credential, and AB-650 is an Associate. Expert badges carry weight on a CV that associate badges do not, and once 30 November passes that route closes. Make sure you are revising against the objectives updated on 28 April 2026, not an older version.

Go straight to AB-650 if you are starting out

If you have not booked MS-102 and have not passed a qualifying associate certification, the maths is against you. You would need to pass two exams before 30 November to end up with a credential built on a retired exam. Put the effort into AB-650 instead, where a single pass earns the certification and the beta is open to book now.

Wait for general availability if you need structure

If you rely on official training, practice assessments and a same-day score, the beta is a poor fit. Microsoft has not yet moved AB-650 out of beta, and practice assessments follow roughly eight weeks after general availability. You pay full price and wait, but you get a supported study path.

Exam Tip: Whichever exam you book, register with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account. Microsoft warns that exam records tied to an organisational account are lost and unrecoverable if you leave that organisation.

The Final Weeks Before 30 November: An MS-102 Countdown

If you have decided to sit MS-102, the deadline now shapes your plan more than the syllabus does. As of 11 October 2026 there are seven weeks left, and the retirement lands at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time on Monday 30 November. For anyone in the UK or Europe, that is the early hours of 1 December, so treat Sunday 29 November as your real last day.

Plan for a retake, not just a pass

Microsoft's retake policy decides how many chances you get before the cut-off:

• After a first fail you wait 24 hours before retaking.
• Every attempt after that needs a 14-day gap.
• You get a maximum of five attempts in 12 months, and each retake is paid for.

That 14-day gap is the trap. A second fail on 20 November leaves no room for a third attempt. Sit your first attempt no later than the week of 2 November. That leaves a sensible second attempt around 9 November after a week of targeted revision, and a third around 23 November if you need it, with a week of buffer behind it.

Weeks 1 and 2 (12 to 25 October): find your gaps

Take Microsoft's free MS-102 practice assessment first, before any more reading. It tells you where you stand far faster than another pass through your notes. Then check your notes against the objectives dated 28 April 2026 in the MS-102 study guide. Start revision with Defender XDR, the heaviest domain at 30 to 35 percent: incidents and advanced hunting, Defender for Office 365 threat policies and attack simulations, Defender for Endpoint onboarding, and Defender for Cloud Apps discovery.

Week 3 (26 October to 1 November): tenant and identity

The study guide gives tenant deployment and Entra identity 25 to 30 percent each. If you revised from an older guide, tenant administration is where you are most likely to be short. Exam Tip: Check your qualifying associate certification now. The Administrator Expert badge needs MS-102 plus MD-102, Teams Administrator or SC-300. Microsoft has not said whether you can pass MS-102 before the deadline and complete the associate afterwards, so do not build your plan on it.

What Happens to Your Existing Certification?

If you already hold Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert, the credential you earned stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript with the date you earned it. A retirement does not erase history.

What changes is the forward path. Microsoft associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually and are renewed by passing a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Once the only qualifying exam for a certification retires, the route to earning it closes to new candidates. How AB-650 Fits the Rest of the Microsoft AI Path

AB-650 joins a growing AB-series of AI-focused Microsoft certifications, and it is worth understanding where it sits before you commit:
