MS-102 was never a standalone certification. It was one half of the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert credential. To earn the Expert badge you had to pass MS-102 and hold at least one of three associate certifications:

- Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Administrator Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate (SC-300)
That two-exam structure is what disappears. Microsoft's replacement, AB-650, is a single associate-level exam with no stated prerequisite certification. You sit one exam and you are certified.

What Is AB-650 and Why Did Microsoft Create It?
Exam AB-650 leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: AI Services Administrator Associate certification. It is currently in beta and general availability is expected in October 2026, lining up with the MS-102 retirement.
The reasoning is not hard to follow. MS-102 tested a Microsoft 365 tenant as it existed before Copilot became a mainstream administrative workload. It is pitched at intermediate level, so it is not an entry point into the Microsoft stack.

Two structural points are worth pulling out.
AB-650 compresses identity, Defender and Purview into one 40 to 45 percent domain. On MS-102 those were three separate domains totalling 75 to 90 percent between them. The security and compliance content has not vanished, it has been condensed to make room.
The tenant administration domain grew. It moves from 10-15 percent on MS-102 to 20-25 percent on AB-650, and now explicitly includes licensing for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Agent 365 and Microsoft Copilot Studio, plus Microsoft 365 Backup and network connectivity insights.
The AI Domain: What Is Genuinely New
The 35 to 40 percent AI services domain is the reason your MS-102 notes will not carry you through AB-650. It breaks into four areas.

Assessing tenant readiness, resolving data readiness problems (data leaks, oversharing and compliance gaps), managing web search for Copilot and Copilot Chat, configuring Microsoft 365 Copilot Search, and managing third-party AI providers and Copilot connectors. Implement and manage agents in Microsoft 365 and Agent 365
This is the sharpest departure from anything on MS-102. You are expected to manage lifecycle workflows for agent identities using Microsoft Entra Agent ID, secure agent access with access packages and conditional access, manage agent owners, and run the agent registry: discovering Microsoft and third-party agents, reviewing requests, publishing or rejecting agents, and uploading custom agents.
Secure and govern agents using Agent 365
Monitoring agent activity, protecting sensitive data, and evaluating compliance gaps, all through Agent 365.
Monitor AI services in Microsoft 365
Managing and monitoring AI service costs, reading Copilot usage reports in the Microsoft 365 admin center, and using the Copilot Control System for adoption and service health.
Exam Tip: Treat Microsoft Entra Agent ID and the Agent 365 registry as your highest-priority new study areas. They are the concepts with no MS-102 equivalent, they sit in the heaviest-weighted new domain, and there is almost no third-party training content covering them yet.
Purview also gains AI-specific scope on AB-650. You need to review and respond to DLP alerts for AI services, and monitor and secure AI activity using Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). DLP policy requirements now explicitly extend to Copilot alongside Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and endpoints.
Cost and the Beta Discount Window
Microsoft prices exams by the country or region in which they are proctored, so check the figure shown at checkout for your location rather than trusting a headline number.

Some caveats that matter:
- Seats are first come, first served. This is not a private access code, so the 300 places can go before the date does.

AB-650 joins a growing AB-series of AI-focused Microsoft certifications, and it is worth understanding where it sits before you commit:
