ITIL 5 Foundation is the current release of the world's most widely recognised qualification in IT service management, issued by PeopleCert. It launched on 12 February 2026 and broadens the framework's scope from IT service management to digital product and service management, reflecting a world where AI, cloud and automation sit at the centre of how services are built and run. At its core is the ITIL Value System, a holistic operating model for the creation, delivery and continual improvement of technology-enabled products and services. ITIL 5 does not discard ITIL 4: the seven guiding principles and the four dimensions carry over, while the value chain expands to eight activities, the management practices are reorganised, and AI governance and sustainability become first-class concerns. The certification is designed for IT professionals at any career stage: from service desk agents and project coordinators through to IT managers and business analysts who interact with technology services. There are no prerequisites — anyone with an interest in understanding how IT services deliver value can sit the exam. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert offers a shorter bridge route. Holding ITIL 5 Foundation demonstrates that you understand the language of modern service management, can apply the guiding principles to everyday work, and are equipped to contribute to a service-oriented culture. It is recognised by employers across every sector globally for roles in ITSM, operations, IT support and digital transformation programmes. CertCrush gets you exam-ready with a free ITIL 5 practice exam experience: realistic practice questions, timed mock exams and a clear explanation for every answer.

Exam Format & Details

The ITIL 5 Foundation exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. The time limit is 60 minutes (75 minutes for candidates sitting in a language other than their first). The pass mark is 65% — you need to answer 26 out of 40 questions correctly. The exam is closed-book: no notes or reference materials are permitted. It is available through PeopleCert's online remote proctoring platform (available 24/7) or at an accredited test centre. The exam voucher costs approximately $383 USD, varying by region and whether you purchase through an accredited training organisation. Results are available immediately after completing the online exam.

Why Practice Questions Matter

The ITIL 5 Foundation exam is scenario-based, not a simple recall test. Questions present realistic workplace situations and ask you to identify the most appropriate ITIL principle, practice or concept to apply. Many candidates who study the theory still struggle because they haven't practised applying it in context. CertCrush practice questions mirror this scenario-driven format, training you to think in the way the exam expects. Repeated practice also reinforces the terminology distinctions (such as the difference between a problem, incident and known error) that the exam routinely tests, and the ITIL 4 to ITIL 5 changes — the eight-activity value chain, the reorganised practices, the new sustainability quality category — that catch out candidates revising from older ITIL 4 material.

Sample Practice Questions

The following questions are a preview of the type of syllabus-aligned questions you will practise in CertCrush. They reflect the format and reasoning style of the ITIL 5 Foundation exam — not actual exam content.

Q1.An organization's service desk team has been producing weekly reports, monthly trend analyses, and quarterly reviews. After applying the guiding principles, they determine that only the monthly trend analysis is used for decision-making. Which combination of principles BEST supports eliminating the unused reports while ensuring the remaining report meets stakeholder needs?

  • A.Keep It Simple and Practical to eliminate waste, and Focus on Value to ensure the remaining report serves stakeholder needs
  • B.Start Where You Are to keep all reports, and Optimize and Automate to automate them
  • C.Progress Iteratively with Feedback to reduce report frequency, and Collaborate and Promote Visibility to share all data
  • D.Think and Work Holistically to add more reports, and Start Where You Are to use existing templates

Domain: Guiding Principles

Q2.An organization uses AI for both predictive monitoring in operations and automated chatbot support for end users. A governance review reveals the chatbot is providing biased responses to certain user groups. The team must decide which governance perspectives to apply. Which combination of perspectives is MOST appropriate to address both the bias issue and the overall AI deployment?

  • A.Ethical Principles for the bias issue, and Data Governance for the accuracy of the predictive monitoring models in operations
  • B.Data Governance for the chatbot response quality, and Regulatory Compliance for the predictive monitoring used across the IT operations estate
  • C.Ethical Principles for the bias issue, Data Governance for model monitoring, and Decision Authority for defining AI autonomy boundaries
  • D.Decision Authority for the chatbot scope, and Regulatory Compliance for employment law, consumer protection, and data residency

Domain: AI Governance

Q3.An organization has a mature continual improvement practice but consistently fails to implement the changes identified in their improvement register. Analysis reveals that improvement initiatives are well-documented and prioritized but lack executive sponsorship and resource allocation. Which combination of continual improvement model steps is MOST likely being neglected?

  • A.Steps 2 and 3, because the assessments and targets are not rigorous enough
  • B.Steps 1 and 4, because strategic alignment and resource planning are insufficient
  • C.Steps 5 and 6, because execution and evaluation are being skipped
  • D.Steps 6 and 7, because results are not being measured or sustained

Domain: Continual Improvement

Q4.A company maps its value stream for deploying a major software release and finds that the Transition activity takes 5 days but only 6 hours of active work. The remaining time is split between waiting for change approval (2 days), waiting for a deployment window (2 days), and waiting for test environment availability (1 day minus 6 hours). Which improvement would address the LARGEST source of waste?

  • A.Automating test environment provisioning to eliminate the 1-day wait
  • B.Extending the deployment window to allow more flexibility
  • C.Streamlining the change approval process to reduce the 2-day approval wait
  • D.Adding more testers to speed up the active testing work

Domain: Value Streams

Q5.An organization applies Lean thinking to optimize their incident management value stream. They discover that tickets are handed off between five different teams, each adding approval steps, and staff must navigate between four disconnected tools to process a single ticket. Using the TIMWOOD waste types, which THREE types of waste are MOST clearly present in this scenario?

  • A.Transport, Over-processing, and Waiting
  • B.Transport, Over-processing, and Motion
  • C.Transport, Motion, and Defects
  • D.Over-processing, Motion, and Inventory

Domain: Integration
