If you booked the PL-900 exam on the strength of a study guide you downloaded earlier this year, roughly a quarter of what you revised is no longer on the paper. Microsoft updated the PL-900 exam skills measured on 24 July 2026. Power Pages was removed outright, and a new domain covering agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio took its place at 20 to 25 percent of the exam.
That is the largest single change to Power Platform Fundamentals since the certification launched, and it landed quietly. Most of page one for "PL-900 exam" still describes an exam with five domains ending in Power Pages. This post gives you the current outline from the official study guide, what was cut, and an honest answer on whether the exam still earns its $99.
What Changed in the PL-900 Exam on 24 July 2026
Microsoft publishes a change log with every skills-measured update, and the PL-900 one is unusually blunt. Three things happened at once.
Power Pages was removed. Both objectives under it, "Describe the capabilities of Power Pages" and "Create a Power Pages site", are gone. Power Pages survives only as a single bullet inside the business value domain, where you need to describe why it exists and nothing more.
A Copilot Studio agents domain was added. It carries 20 to 25 percent, the same weight as Power Apps and Power Automate. It covers building agents with topics and knowledge sources, tools including MCP servers and agent flows, publishing through channels, Microsoft Agent 365, usage monitoring and agent evaluations.
The build-it-yourself objectives were rewritten as describe-it objectives. "Build a canvas app" and "Build a model-driven app" were both removed. What replaced them is "Describe how to build basic apps by using Power Apps", and the bullets underneath are about using AI to create a canvas app, using AI to create a model-driven app, and building AI-powered apps with the vibe experience.
That third change is the one candidates underestimate. The exam still asks about Power Apps at the same rough weight, but the framing moved from manual construction to describing what AI-assisted construction does.
The New PL-900 Domains and Weights
Here is the current outline against the one it replaced.

Business value took the biggest cut, dropping from up to a fifth of the exam to as little as a twentieth. If you have been drilling "what is the value of Dataverse" flashcards, redirect that time. The four technical domains now carry 80 to 95 percent of the paper between them, and they are weighted almost identically, so there is no longer a single domain you can afford to skip.
Exam Tip: PL-900 is 45 minutes long and you need a scaled score of 700 out of 1000 to pass. Microsoft does not publish the question count. Budget your time on the assumption that you get well under a minute per question, because you do.
What the Copilot Studio Domain Actually Asks
The new domain is not a rebadged chatbot section. It splits into building and managing.
Building covers use cases for agents, building conversation paths with topics, wiring knowledge sources, and using tools. That tools bullet is where the exam has moved furthest ahead of most study material: it names MCP servers and agent flows explicitly. Publishing agents through channels closes the section.
Managing covers Microsoft Agent 365, monitoring agent usage and adoption, and agent evaluations. Agent 365 is recent enough that a candidate revising from a 2025 course will not have heard of it, which makes it a reliable source of dropped marks.
None of this requires you to build a production agent. It is a fundamentals exam, so the verb is "describe" throughout. What it does require is that you have opened Copilot Studio at least once, created a trivial agent, attached a knowledge source and looked at the publishing channels list. An afternoon in the free trial is worth more here than a week of reading.
Is PL-900 Still Worth Taking in 2026?
The honest case for the exam got stronger this year, and the honest case against it did not change.
Microsoft spent 2026 dismantling the professional tier of the Power Platform track. PL-500 and PL-600 retired, and PL-200 retired on 31 August 2026, replaced by AB-410 Intelligent Applications Builder Associate. It was refreshed, which tells you where Microsoft expects the entry point to the AB track to be.
Take PL-900 if:
- You are heading for AB-410 or one of the AB-series agent credentials and want a cheap, low-risk first exam that now shares vocabulary with them.
- Your employer runs Power Platform and you need to prove baseline literacy in agents, not just apps and flows.
- You want a fundamentals credential that does not expire. Microsoft fundamentals certifications are lifetime credentials with no renewal requirement.
Skip PL-900 if:
- You already hold an associate-level Power Platform or Microsoft 365 certification. It adds nothing above what you have.
- You are aiming at Power BI. That path runs through PL-300, which sits under the Power BI product and was untouched by the 2026 Power Platform reshuffle.
- You need a cybersecurity credential. PL-900 has no security depth. SC-900 is the better $99 for that.
At $99 in the United States, the exam is one of the cheapest ways to put a Microsoft badge on a CV, and the new agent content is the part employers are actually asking about in 2026.
How to Adjust Your Study Plan
If you are already mid-preparation, three moves recover most of the gap.
- Check the date on everything you are using. Any course, video or practice set that lists Power Pages as a domain is describing the pre-24 July exam. It is not useless, but the Power Pages module is now worth one bullet.
- Add Copilot Studio hands-on time. Roughly a fifth to a quarter of your questions come from a domain that did not exist before July. Match your study hours to the weight.
- Re-read the Power Apps and Power Automate objectives, not just the topics. The subject matter is similar, the verbs are not. Questions now ask what AI-assisted creation does rather than which control you drag where.

No. Microsoft fundamentals certifications, including Power Platform Fundamentals, are lifetime credentials with no annual renewal assessment. Associate and expert certifications do require yearly renewal.
