If you have spent the last few years building a career around Palo Alto firewalls, you have probably typed some version of the same search recently: the PCNSE is retired, so what replaces it? The longer answer is more useful, because Palo Alto did not simply rename the exam. What Actually Happened to the PCNSE and PCNSA
Palo Alto Networks retired its product-centric exam line-up and replaced it with a role-based framework. The PCNSE was withdrawn on 31 July 2025, and the PCNSA was pulled ahead of it. They were not alone. The PCDRA, PCCSE, PCSAE, PCSFE and PCCET all went the same way as part of the same restructure.

A single monolithic engineer exam stopped reflecting reality once the portfolio grew to include Prisma Access, Cortex XDR, XSIAM, XSOAR, SD-WAN and cloud security. Exam Tip: Your PCNSE does not become invalid because the exam retired. Palo Alto credentials are valid for two years from the date you passed, and a retired exam does not shorten that clock. What it does mean is that when your two years are up, there is no PCNSE to re-sit.
The New Palo Alto Networks Certification Framework Explained

The structural change worth noticing is that Specialist now sits above Professional, which is the opposite of what most people assume. Professional is the broad, job-ready credential covering multi-platform deployment. Specialist is the deeper, narrower credential for one platform or role. If you sit the Professional exam expecting it to be the harder of the two, you have misread the ladder.

Retirement dates have shifted more than once during the transition, so confirm the current position on the Palo Alto Networks certification site before you plan around a specific date.
Note that the PCNSE maps to two possible destinations. If your job is hands-on configuration, troubleshooting and policy work on the firewall estate, NGFW Engineer is your exam. If You Hold a PCNSE Right Now: What to Do
Here is the part the vendor messaging tends to soften. There is no formal transition exam and no exemption. When your PCNSE reaches its printed expiry date, you sit the new exam in full, with no credit for the credential you already hold.
That gives you a straightforward decision tree:
- Check your expiry date first. Log into your Palo Alto Networks certification account and find the printed expiry on the credential, not the date you think you sat it. Everything else follows from that date.
- If you have more than six months left, you have time to study properly. Use it to sit NGFW Engineer before expiry so you never appear uncertified on a CV or a bid document.
- If you have under three months left, accept a short gap or book now. There is no grace period that extends a credential simply because the original exam retired.
- If your role has moved on, do not default to the firewall exam out of habit. An engineer who now spends most of their time in Cortex XDR should sit XDR Analyst or XDR Engineer instead. The whole point of the restructure is that you certify for the job you do now.

The NGFW Engineer Exam: What to Expect
The Next-Generation Firewall Engineer credential is the direct successor for most hands-on PCNSE holders, and it is a Specialist-level exam.

- Price: 150 US dollars at Foundational level, 200 at Professional, 250 at Specialist including NGFW Engineer. Architect-level pricing is confirmed at booking.
- Duration: most exams run to 90 minutes.
- Passing score: exam-prep guides report a threshold of 860 on a 300 to 1000 scale, so verify the exact figure on your exam blueprint before exam day.
- Validity: two years from the date you pass.
Content-wise, this is not the PCNSE with a new badge on it.
